In 2004, Rik Van Bruaene managing director of VBR-Belgium developed various controlled fragmented projectiles for the caliber 5.7x28 mm that are based on the above mentioned patent protection.

The VBR-Belgium B-3-PF1 brass projectiles with external head fragmentation groove, intended for the 5.7x28 mm caliber, fall under the above-mentioned patent technology of VBR-Belgium. Also other controlled fragmenting projectiles in copper or hardened steel where developed under the above-mentioned patent technology of VBR-Belgium.

The VBR-B 5.7x28 mm B-3-PF and Vanguard 57 Black Dragon Fang or Elite T6B are all based on the VBR-Belgium patent technology and all have an external head fragmentation groove.

At the VBR-Belgium 5.7x28 mm B-2-PF, the external head fragmentation groove was omitted, so that the projectile only fragmented into two parts. This projectile was developed to pierce CRISAT protection with the solid head section. Limiting it to only 2 fragments has the advantage that each fragment is heavier and can penetrate deeper to damage the spine and thus immediately neutralize the opponent. Firstly, we would like to point out that the 5.7x28 mm caliber is in Belgium forbidden for civilian use and is only allowed for military and special police units. The term armor piercing ammunition is already granted in Belgium immediately as soon as soft bulletproof vests can be pierced. Armor piercing ammunition is also prohibited in Belgium for civilians and is only allowed for military and special police use.

In the United States the caliber 5.7x28mm is permitted by law and there are different types of hollow point ammunition on the market in the caliber 5.7x28mm for hunters and sport shooters. Only the armor piercing cartridges with steel core bullets such as the SS190 are forbidden. In the US, the concept of armor piercing ammunition is defined completely differently, and projectiles containing brass, steel, bronze and some other materials such as beryllium copper are considered to be armor piercing. A number of copper alloys that do not contain the materials determined by law as armor piercing are permitted by law.
